Security 1

Security, spywares, viruses, worms and other malicious parasites

As an introduction, you should read the ten security software test found here on a french help forum... Yes, the test dates back to 2008, but I don't think the result would be much different today. Convinced? so visit the site of Malwarebytes anti-malware (M.B.A.M.).

As for me, I have long wondered how to effectively protect my computer against malware and, although i haven't had a serious problem in years, i was wondering recently. Today, I think I have simply found the best practical solution possible. This is what I intend to explain in this part.

I first reject the usual method, that of an all-powerful anti-virus monitoring everything that is executed or downloaded, like Avast, Norton, Trend, ... Why;?

because these softwares, running continuously, slow down the computer constantly, and that I want to keep a fast pc;

because they have too much power, even that of blocking the execution of programs that I want to run, and I didn’t accept that my own computer would forbid me to run the programs of my choice, on the pretext that an anti-virus software publisher would have placed them in a black list: I am and I want to remain the master of my machine;

because this software is ineffective, as shown in the article I started with. Why put in your machine a useless anti-virus?

because these programs, even when they are presented as free, are commercial and encourage, after a period of use, to buy their paid version;

because these are gas factories that take up a lot of space on the hard drive;

because, with them, the computer is constantly active, the hard disk is always in awakening;

because the creators of viruses take it into account and create code that escapes the most used anti-viruses (so do not install the same anti-virus as everyone else, Norton or Avast for example);

because sometimes they sell the data they collect to other companies.

...

We have to find something else.

Most viruses, Trojans and other worms install themselves in the Windows folder. That doesn't mean we can't find one anywhere else, but that in most cases the Windows folder is infected in one way or another. So we need software that can detect any changes to the Windows folder, which doesn't run all the time, is small and fast. This program must, as a first step and once for all, browse the Windows folder, remember the files present by storing a unique key for each, built from its content. Then, each time Windows starts, it should quickly browse all files in the operating system folder, recalculate the unique key and compare it to its initial value: if the key has changed, then the file has been modified and the software must notify the user. No need to process all files, but only those that can contain executable code.

Any file found to be new or changed in the Windows folder should then be tested for malware, and, if necessary, eradicated, if possible automatically, if not manually, by the user. Two software are therefore needed: one that quickly analyzes the Windows folder each time it is started, the other which detects and removes malwares.

These two software exist: the first one is unique, and it's a little diamond. I have written it. I took up the idea that I found in the Sentinel program for Windows Xp by Derek De Oliveira.

I called my own program Sentin'l. It works under Windows Xp, 7, 8 and 10. So, i don't use the Derek solution. I found my program less beautiful, but better, more simple and ajustable.

For the second program, choose MalwareByte's anti-malware, the most efficient in its class.

This is the solution that I have implemented on several machines, and which gives full satisfaction. Most of the time, the problems it reports come from the installation of another software that writes files in the Windows folder, or who modified or added keys to the registry in sensitive places. When a real problem is detected, virus, worm, or any malware, Sentin'l proposes to launch M.B.A.M. to scan the computer and remove the problem.
